One of the quiet advantages of living in northern Malibu is how much nature sits just beyond the front door. Solstice Canyon
Solstice Canyon is one of the most accessible and shaded hikes in the area, managed by the National Park Service. Escondido Falls
Escondido Falls is the tallest waterfall in the Santa Monica Mountains, cascading anywhere from 50 to 150 feet depending on the season and recent rainfall. The moderate hike in takes you through lush canyon scenery that feels a world away from Malibu’s coastal image. Timing matters here, the falls are at their most dramatic after winter rains, so a visit in late winter or early spring tends to be the most rewarding.
Point Dume State Beach & Nature Preserve
Technically a headland as much as a trail, Point Dume offers a dramatic bluff hike with panoramic Pacific views and paths down to hidden coves. Spring is an especially good time to visit, when wildflowers bloom along the trail and gray whales can occasionally be spotted migrating offshore.
Building a Morning Around the Trails
Many Trancas residents treat these trails as part of a regular routine rather than a special occasion, an early hike before the day heats up, followed by breakfast at one of the nearby cafés in Trancas Country Market. Because these trailheads sit so close to the development, it’s realistic to fit a meaningful hike into a normal morning rather than planning it as a half-day trip.

Malibu’s canyon trails can be deceptively warm even when the coastline feels cool and breezy, especially later in the day. A few practical notes for anyone new to the area:
- Start early, particularly in summer and fall, to avoid midday heat in the canyons
